If you’re looking at taking your business remote, and you may well have to in light of recent events, you probably have a lot to consider.

How do you keep an eye on your team if they’re working from home?

What happens to your day to day operations?

How do you continue to serve your customers and attract new ones without a storefront?

Take a birds-eye look at your company

What are the operational requirements of your business?

What do you need to do to satisfy your existing customers?

When moving your company online there’s going to be a lot of changes, but you need to be thinking in terms of income-generating activities, and what you can do to keep your business commercially viable.

This might mean taking products and services online or exploring new offerings with the abundance of technology available.

Now is also the time to be looking at your organisation chart.

What roles and duties need to be carried out in a remote working environment?

Perhaps some of your team members will carry out new duties, like community management or content creation.

You might need to make new hires, upskill, or get advice in order to make the change as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I cannot stress enough the importance of taking the time to plan, making strategic decisions, and executing with military precision.

Taking your products online

If you’re a retail business, I have one word for you.


Creating a digital storefront with online shopping and delivery options is an absolute no-brainer.

You can bundle together popular products, offer free shipping over a certain amount spent, and offer discount codes for referring friends.

Service-based businesses might have more questions around this but still have several options.

You could offer online courses, webinars, joint ventures, create a shoppable product, bundle offers together, the sky’s your limit.

Of course, it will change depending on your industry, but at the very least you should be amping up your online presence and content game.

There have never been more people online looking for entertainment, education, motivation, humour, and connection.

The demand is there, I strongly suggest you cater to it.

Prepare and empower your team to go remote

Let’s get the basics sorted.

You’re obviously going to need to make sure everyone has a good internet connection, a computer to work from, and webcams/phones to conference call on.

Communication up and down the line is key to avoiding bottlenecks and keeping the workflow running smoothly, so daily video calls and some sort of messenger tools like Flock or Slack can help ensure everyone is on the same page.

If you’re concerned about monitoring your teams progress and results, then it might be a good idea to do what I do – start every day with a video call where you outline what you’re going to do that day, then wrap it up with a video call at the end of the day and report how you did.

This has the added bonus of keeping people feeling connected, and allows you to be present and visible as a leader.

When working remotely, it’s super important to ensure you still have that strong team connection and culture to offset any feelings of isolation.

Check-in with your team, remind them to get up and stretch their legs, ask if they need help with anything, and offer assistance while you make the transition to remote.


It’s a bit of an adjustment, but getting your business remote-ready is sure to pay off!
